Agroforestry: Win-Win livelihood opportunity
June 25, 2024The nurseries are turning green. The tiny little seeds have grown into seedlings and are dancing with the rhythm of wind. They are so eager to be planted once they leave the nurseries. Therefore, we are waiting for the appropriate time to plant the nursery bed seedlings, polypot seedlings, and sow the seed bombs in the plantation sites.
Entire staffs of Plantation Initiative Nepal, including main office staffs and nursery manager, is working tirelessly to plant trees. In fact, pre-plantation phase is second most important phase after the nursery development phase. Many activities are carried out during this phase. Staffs from the main office visit different nurseries to check on the status of the nursery seedlings. Additionally, volunteers are being mobilized for forest inventory and boundary mapping in order to fix sites for the year.
The monsoon season in Nepal generally begins in June and ends in September. As a result, local led by respective nursery managers cleared sites in accordance with the natural clock. The seedlings were then transported to their respective planting sites by vehicle and by carrying them by “Doko” on back. Doko is a type of bamboo basket that is handwoven in a conical shape. During plantation, volunteers and we travel to the various planting sites with nursery mangers and locals to instruct them on plantation activities and record keeping. The plantation phase is fascinating time to connect with nature and people. Trees can bring people together. During the break, we eat homemade tiffin and talk to each other, which is difficult when we are busy on our own works.
Also, planting more trees, will contribute to global reforestation efforts, restoring lost forest, repairing damaged ecosystem and many more. We still have time to plant many trees. We will soon reach our goal for the year. Hurry up! – It’s time to plant more trees.
